For many, the chance to visit one of the Wonders of the World would be enough to satisfy a bucket list check mark, but I recently got to up that ante.
On the heels of a trip to our S.Å.K. manufacturing facility in the South of China, I had a stopover in Beijing and took advantage of the opportunity by booking a visit to the Mutianyu section of The Great Wall.
Accompanied by my knowledgeable guide and driver, Harry, we made the pleasant 90 minute journey from the airport area of Beijing headed north.
I had packed my DJI Spark for the trip with hope that I might get a chance to get some footage of my visit, and knowing it was small enough to haul around if not. Fortunately, I was in luck.
The beginning section of the wall was crowded with hundreds of tourists brandishing selfie sticks, not the right place to try and launch even the smallest of drones. Harry recommend hiking to the “wild” section of the wall. After an intense 2-3 kilometer hike in the summer heat I found myself surrounded by only a handful of people, and in the perfect spot to launch.
I was able to do 2 flights with the Spark, each about 11 minutes in length (making sure I returned home with ample battery). The day was slightly overcast (in fact it rained on the drive back to the hotel) so the footage isn’t the greatest, but it was definitely an awe-inspiring view and a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the wall, in person…from my drone.
